And even though they are Christmas ball ornaments, you could use lots of different colors so they’d be perfect for any season. Imagine them in pinks, yellows, and purples, filling a basket around Easter. Or image a vase filled with orange, black, purple, and green balls for Halloween. You could even make all white ones for wedding decor.
For mine, I decided to go with green, blue, and white, with just a sprinkling of red. It turned out super neat looking…but I’ll warn you: if you want to make an entire set of them or several as gifts, be prepared to spend a lot of time and money making these!
To make sure button Christmas balls, you need buttons in various sizes and coordinating colors, pins with large ball heads also in coordinating colors, and Styrofoam balls. You may also want some ribbon to create a tie for hanging the ornament.
Then, simply start placing the buttons. Place them as close together as you can, using pins to stick them to the ball. Stack different colors on top of one another and use additional buttons stacked on top to cover any gaps.
Like I said, this process takes a pretty long time. It’s also a little pricey. You need at least two packs of large buttons (I only bought one, as soon in the above picture, so I ended up having to go back to the store for more), as well as at least two packs of small buttons and two packs of pins (again, I only bought one, so I had to go to the store for more to finish the ball). I ended up working on one ball for well over an hour – probably closer to two. But, the nice thing is that you can do this while watching TV since it’s a pretty simple task.
Anyway, here’s the finished product:
At this point, you might want to add a ribbon for hanging, of your can use in other ways, like stacked in baskets or large jars/vases. I don’t think I have the patience to make an entire set of these, but I’m glad I have one now for my tree!
