Growing up, it was rare to find store bought cookies in our house. It was even more rare to find them at Grandma’s house. Cake, cookies, pies… whatever treats she had on hand were homemade. Cherry pie, frosted brownies, and these drop sugar cookies are some of her staple treats.
Grandmas are the best, aren’t they?
Now that I’m older, I’ve been collecting my favorite recipes from her. While no one makes them like she does, I’m still pretty happy with the results! Usually she tops her cookies with regular white sugar, but I decided to use colored sugar to make them a little more fun.
The best part is that you just drop spoonfuls of dough on the cookie sheet instead of having to spend time rolling dough and cutting our designs like our Mom’s Rolled Sugar Cookies. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE those cookies. But dropping spoonfuls is much quicker than rolling them out.
Our family’s favorite Grandma story is from a few Christmases ago. Our mom was in the kitchen, frying some breaded chicken on the stovetop. AS is always the case on Christmas, everything comes together at the last minute, so right before all the food goes on the table, things get a little hectic. Well, mom looked away for a moment to get something out of the oven, and the chicken on the stovetop started to get a little dark. Grandma, who we have NEVER heard say a curse word in her life, yells, “Holy shit! Don’t burn the chicken!”
To this day, it still cracks us up. I’m laughing just writing about it!
