Smoked BBQ Chicken Legs

It wouldn’t be #CookoutWeek without some kind of BBQ chicken recipe. It’s one of my favorite meals! I remember when I was a kid, the last day of the summer camp I attended would always feature a BBQ chicken dinner.

They’d start the wood going really early in the day, and by 5 or 6, all the campers and their parents would be drooling from the smell!

These smoked BBQ chicken legs are so yummy! We don’t have an actual smoker, so we just made a makeshift smoker box for our gas grill. Here’s how you do it:

  • Soak your wood chips for 60 minutes (we used apple wood, but cherry would also be great).
  • Use a nail or screwdriver to hammer a bunch of holes in the bottom of foil pan.
  • Add the woodchips, cover with tin foil, and poke more holes.
  • Turn on burners on one side of your grill and place the homemade smoker box over it.
  • Once you start seeing smoke (5-10 minutes), add your meat to the other side of the grill.
  • Close the lid and resist the urge to peak more than 1-2 times per hour. You don’t want to let out too much smoke!

Once we smoked these chicken legs for a few hours, we slathered on some of the best BBQ sauce I’ve ever tasted and finished them over medium heat on the grill.

I’m not exaggerating about the BBQ sauce either. I’m usually not a huge fan of sauces and would rather have rubs, but oh baby. This stuff is so good!!!

I’m totally too wimpy for their hot sauce, but the True Made Foods ketchup is also delicious. I seriously cannot believe it is healthier than what is on the market. It just goes to show you… real, nutritious food tastes good!

Okay, I’ve done enough gushing about this BBQ sauce. Here’s the chicken recipe:

The perfect, easy BBQ chicken recipe for any summer cookout

Ingredients

  • Chicken legs
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Your favorite BBQ sauce (we recommend True Made Foods!)

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle the chicken legs with salt and pepper and smoke for 2 hours.
  2. Slather the chicken legs with your favorite BBQ sauce.
  3. Grill over medium-low heat for 10 minutes on each side, or until done.
  4. Brush on more BBQ sauce before serving if desired.

Notes

Don't forget that your wood chips will need about 1 hour to soak in water before you start smoking.

If you don't have a smoker or smoker box for your grill, simply use a foil pan with holes poked in it. Place the box over low heat and place your chicken on the other side of the grill (not turned on). Remove the smoker box from the grill and turn the grill up to medium heat to start the final grilling stage.
