Recipe FAQs

What is the Best Alcohol For Mimosas?

The best alcohol for mimosas is champagne, prosecco, or cava. Any dry, sparkling wine will work well though.

You do not have to spring for a very expensive bottle either, as the fruit juices have a lot of their own flavor.

What Can I Use Instead of OJ in a Mimosa?

You can use any other type of fruit juice instead of OJ in a mimosa. Pineapple, grapefruit, mango, and lemonade are popular options.

However, nearly any juice or juice cocktail will work well, so feel free to swap the orange for anything else you like.

What is Triple Sec?

Triple sec is an orange flavored liqueur. It’s used in many cocktails, and boosts the orange flavoring of a drink when it is added.

There are many popular brands, but anything labeled as triple sec or as orange liqueur will deliver a similar result.

What is a Mimosa With Cranberry Juice Called?

A mimosa with cranberry juice is called a poinsettia cocktail. This is just the replacement of the orange with cranberry juice as an alternative.

There are many other variation names as well, each indicating the juice that is combined with the sparkling wine to form a mimosa.

Should Mimosas Be Brut or Dry?

Dry is best for mimosas, as the less sweet wine balances well with the much sweeter fruit juice.

Using a brut would make the cocktail very sweet overall. While it works fine for the mix, many find it too sweet to be enjoyable.

What’s the Difference Between a Mimosa and a Bellini?

The difference between a mimosa and a bellini is that a mimosa is made with juice, while a bellini is made with fruit puree. Both use the same base of sparkling wine or champagne.

The terms are often used interchangeably since the difference is somewhat minimal.

Pro Tips

  • Only make what you (and your guests) will consume at one time, so as to not lose all the carbonation
  • Feel free to adjust the proportions of juice to alcohol as you like. Everyone has different preferences as to how β€œstrong” they like their drinks to taste, so tweak as desired!

Storage Tips

  • Store mimosas in a pitcher or carafe for serving. Do not leave it sitting out for longer than two hours (but feel free to refrigerate and come back for more later)
  • If you don’t use your whole bottle of prosecco, I highly recommend a champagne bottle stopper. They do an amazing job of preserving the bubbles until the next brunch!
